As Alford is laced with history, there is some wonderful architecture here. Explore the quaint streets and you will discover thatched cottages, higgledy-piggledy houses and medieval churches.
Towering over the rural landscape, Alford Windmill is undoubtedly the most famous architectural landmark in the town. Built in 1837, this seven-storied windmill was originally one of three in the town - but it is the only one that remains today.
If you’re keen to learn more about the town’s history, Alford Manor House is a must-visit. Dating back to 1611, this historic house is reputedly the largest thatched manor house in England. If you want to take a look around, both the house and gardens are open to the public from spring to autumn.
Just behind the Manor House, you will also find The Museum of Rural Life. This fascinating museum will allow you the chance to experience a taste of domestic life from a bygone era. Many of Alford’s former businesses are represented here, with a big focus on the agricultural community.
Walking in Alford
Alford is surrounded by beautiful countryside, and there are plenty of walking trails which will help you make the most of it. Whether you fancy a gentle stroll around the town, or a challenging hike out to the coast, there are routes for all abilities.
Each trail features different points of interest en-route, so you can learn more about the town’s history, architecture – and former residents. Explorer John Smith and preacher Ann Hutchinson were both born in Alford; Influential writer Thomas Paine worked here and is honoured with a blue plaque.
The Lincolnshire Coast
As Alford is just 7 miles from the coast, a trip to the seaside is a must. It will take you just 20 minutes to reach the beach by car, but if you’re up for an adventure, there is a cycling trail which runs from Alford to Huttoft Beach.
Also known as Moggs Eye, Huttoft Beach is one of the most peaceful coastal locations in Lincolnshire. There is a wide stretch of golden sand here, and you can enjoy some stunning views across the sea. At night, the area has very little light pollution, making it a top spot for stargazing.
