Things to do in Spilsby

Whilst it may be one of the smaller market towns in the Lincolnshire Wolds, you will find all sorts of things to do in Spilsby.

The town’s heritage has been carefully protected, and very little has changed here since the 19th century. The pretty streets are steeped in history, and there is some fascinating architecture to explore.

In the centre of town, the Parish Church of St James stands on a rise of ground overlooking the historic market place. A fine example of medieval architecture, this pretty church has been welcoming worshippers for over 600 years.

Just outside Spilsby, you can also explore the ruins of Bolingbroke Castle. Built in 1220 by Ranulf de Blundeville, the Earl of Lincoln, this medieval fortress is steeped in history. It is perhaps best known as the birthplace of Henry Bolingbroke, who went on to be crowned Henry IV, King of England in 1399.

Living history

As you explore the town centre, you will be following in the footsteps of famous explorer John Franklin. Commemorated with a statue in the market place, this famous naval officer was born and bred in Spilsby.

Another famous face to pass through this town was Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Born in the neighbouring village of Somersby, Tennyson was one of the most heralded English poets of the Victorian Era, taking the position of Poet Laureate for over 40 years.

During his time in the Wolds, Tennyson was a frequent visitor to Gunby Hall. Now managed by the National Trust, this beautiful historic house is open to the public. There are some gorgeous gardens to explore, as well as walks around the wider estate. Venture out into the surrounding countryside to discover the Lincolnshire landscape that inspired Tennyson so often.

Explore outdoors

There’s nothing like a long walk in the great outdoors to get the ideas flowing. If you’re keen to explore more of the Lincolnshire countryside, the Snipe Dales is a great place to start.

Managed by the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, the Snipe Dales Country Park and Nature Reserve is situated just 5 miles from Spilsby.

Covering over 200 acres, this huge park is a wonderful place to walk. With woodland, wet valleys, wild meadows and scrub, there is an incredibly diverse landscape here. It is one of the only places to reflect the original landscape of the Wolds, so its preservation is essential.

As well as protecting the historic landscape, the reserve supports a rich variety of wildlife, including some rare migrating birds. Visit at different points throughout the year and you can enjoy an entirely different experience. In spring, the area is brought to life with bird song, whilst autumn transforms the trees with vibrant shades of red and orange.

Aviation heritage

Like much of Lincolnshire, Spilsby also boasts a wealth of aviation heritage. In 1943, an airfield was opened on the outskirts of the town, and operations were carried out here until the end of World War Two.

If you want to find out more, you can visit the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre. Just on the outskirts of Spilsby, this fascinating museum has a wealth of exhibits, photographs and memorabilia, as well as a fantastic collection of RAF vehicles.

Most famously, the centre is home to some of the most important aircraft of WW2 – including one of the rare Avro Lancaster Bombers, ‘Just Jane’.
