The Wolds has been home to a variety of influential figures throughout history, and you can walk in their footsteps! Head into Louth to discover where Alfred, Lord Tennyson had his very first poems printed. Alternatively, head to the village of Willoughby to visit the birthplace of Captain John Smith, the explorer famous for being saved by the legendary Pocahontas.

Historic market towns
The Lincolnshire Wolds is surrounded by many picturesque market towns. Towering above the Wolds in the market town of Louth is the iconic spire of St James’ Church – the tallest medieval parish church spire in the country. The town is also rich in Georgian architecture, and a visit to Louth Museum will give you a fantastic insight into the history of this quaint market town.
At the foot of the Lincolnshire Wolds stands Alford. For those with a keen interest in history, why not plan a visit to Alford Manor House. Dating from 1611, it is said to be the largest thatched manor house in the country and is a great example of Georgian and Victorian design.

Aviation heritage
Much like the rest of the county, the Lincolnshire Wolds has a rich aviation heritage. Due to the squadrons based here during World War II, Lincolnshire was known as Bomber County. Today, it is still very much at the centre of aviation, reflected in the various RAF bases peppering the landscape.
