Aviation heritage in the Lincolnshire Wolds

Deeply rooted in its landscape, aviation heritage in the Lincolnshire Wolds is a large part of its history. Known as Bomber County, Lincolnshire has long played a key role in aviation heritage, meaning there are plenty of stories to uncover!

Aviation museums and heritage centres

Spilsby, just on the border of the Wolds, is home to the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre. Step back in time to a WWII Bomber Command and experience the sights and sounds of a wartime airfield. This Museum was set up by two farming brothers, Fred and Harold Panton, as a tribute to their eldest brother Christopher who was shot down on a bombing raid over Nuremberg in 1944.

Just 20 minutes from the edge of the Wolds is Coningsby’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitor Centre. This centre provides a unique opportunity to see the flight’s historic aircraft up close and observe the RAF BBMF technicians keeping them airworthy.

Home of the Dambusters

The Petwood Hotel is a cherished aviation heritage gem located in Woodhall Spa, just 20 minutes from the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds. This former RAF base was home of the legendary Dambusters, famous for Operation Chastise using the ingenious ‘Bouncing Bomb’. Now a place to visit, dine or stay, the Squadron Bar hosts a range of memorabilia and tributes to Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC, Group Captain Leonard Cheshire VC and their officers.
