Nature and wildlife in the Lincolnshire Wolds is thriving throughout its ancient landscapes. This natural haven was designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1973 and is considered to be some of the finest countryside in Britain. Providing vital habitats for rare flowers and wildlife, it is easy to immerse yourself in the beauty of this area.
Twitching in the Wolds
Thanks to the varied landscapes, the Lincolnshire Wolds has a variety of birds to spot, from sand martins and bittern, to peregrines and starlings.
Why not head to Willingham Woods and Linwood Warren, remnants of an extensive heathland that formerly lay in Market Rasen. In autumn and winter, you can spot species such as Redwings, Tawny Owl, Green Woodpecker and Siskin. In spring and summer, look out for the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Cuckoo, Willow Warbler and Spotted Flycatcher.
Visit Louth Lud Valley in autumn and winter to witness Fieldfares and Redwings arriving, and skeins of Pink-Footed Goose flying overhead. If you to visit during spring or summer, look out for Chiffchaff, Goldcrest and Peregrine.

Protecting and preserving nature is essential for the Lincolnshire Wolds to thrive. There are plenty of nature reserves here, like Snipe Dales Country Park in Spilsby. This attractive nature reserve is made up of mixed woodland, wet valleys, grassland and scrub. The diverse landscape here supports a wide range of birds and other wildlife, including butterflies and dragonflies. With walking trails, accessible routes and dogs permitted in the Country Park, it is a great location to visit during your time in the Wolds.
Parks and gardens
A great way to discover the beauty of the Wolds is by visiting the various parks and gardens on offer. Hubbard’s Hills, located near Louth, is an area of natural beauty formed 40,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age. This landscape boasts a valley running through with mature trees on its sloping sides. Open to the public since 1907, this free park features an Edwardian pleasure garden, a lake and country park.
