Cycling in the Lincolnshire Wolds

It is said cycling in the Lincolnshire Wolds is one of the best ways to explore the landscape. The versatility of the area is what draws in cyclists – from road cycling along smooth tarmac to adrenaline-inducting mounting bike trails, there is something for everyone.

Cycle-friendly

Alongside the routes through quiet towns and villages, more recent developments have made the Lincolnshire Wolds more cycle-friendly than ever! With canal side cycleways and reclaimed railway paths that are traffic and hill free, there are plenty of routes to suit all of the family.

The highlights

There’s so much to discover along each route; from farm shops and tea rooms to historic landmarks and some of the oldest churches in Britain. A popular stop for cyclists is Claythorpe Watermill, regarded as one of Lincolnshire’s ‘loveliest surprises’! This 18th century mill is home to a well-loved café surrounded by rich wildlife and riverside views.

Another favourite stop-off is Red Hill Nature Reserve, famous for its exposed red chalk rich in fossils. This precious habitat spans across 27 hectares and is home to grassland, a disused quarry and wildflower meadows. If you’re looking for a stop which makes you feel like you’re truly surrounded by the beauty of the Lincolnshire Wolds, look no further.

Need a hand?

If you encounter a puncture along the way, rest assured that Horncastle is home to Just One More Bike. This family run bicycle business carries out repairs and maintenance alongside its cycle-friendly café, meaning you can enjoy a sweet treat or light lunch while you wait!
